How relevant are candlestick patterns?

Beginner here. Got many videos recommended about candlestick patterns. Do they work?

If yes, then which timeframe do they work better?

Recommend a good source for learning them.

Thanks :pray::pray:

Of course they can. But only if you know what you’re doing. You can’t just go ‘oh I see something that kinda looks like the shape I saw on that one video’ and then blindly trade it.

You have to learn what these shapes and patterns mean, and pay attention to the surrounding context. Do that instead of trying to memorize patterns. I’ll give you an example:

You’ve probably seen the head & shoulders (H&S) pattern by now. What is it really? It’s not just a shape that happens to kinda look like a head and some shoulders.

What it says is that there was an uptrend, making higher highs and higher lows, that then made a lower high (the right shoulder). This means that it tried to make a new higher high but failed, showing potential weakness in buying pressure.

Price then proceeds to break the last higher low (usually the ‘neckline’), making a lower low. This shows that selling pressure has increased, as it was able to break the previously impenetrable trend structure. You now have weakened buying pressure + strengthened selling pressure, which means conditions are good for trend reversal.

Another way to see it is that now you have a lower high and a lower low. What’s that the definition for? A downtrend, i.e., there’s a high chance price is reversing now based on what it’s doing.

But it also matters where this is occurring and what sort of market conditions and structure you’re seeing overall.

If it happens at a key resistance area, then it makes sense and adds confluence to the trade. If it happens at no particular key area, then perhaps you might consider being more cautious.

Also look to see the overall big picture market structure; is price trending, ranging, etc.? That could also change how you see the H&S and how much weight it holds.

Thank you very much for such a detailed and easy-to-understand explanation :pray:

Can you recommend a good source?? That maybe has this type of explanation :smile:

You’re welcome!

Go to YouTube, don’t waste your time here. If you have any specific question, ask ChatGPT.

If YouTube, I recommend TJR.
